Mobile Passport Review: Our Newest Must-Have Travel App

Our flight was delayed. As we watched the time tick away in the Lima airport, our thoughts shifted to the inevitable: We’re not going to make our connecting flight in Miami. And we both spent time bonding about how much we hate Miami airport and weren’t looking forward to any more time than needed there.

As the plane finally took off almost 2 hours late, the captain came on with the updated landing time: We’d only have 55 minutes from the time we pulled up to the gate to the time our next flight would take off. We had to clear Customs and Border Protection, get through security, and catch an air train to another part of the airport and do it all in more or less 35 minutes? Impossible. Until it’s not. And the only reason it was possible? One app that has now vaulted to the top of our must have list if you have ANY international travel planned.

Qatar 787 Business Class Review

I’m not a sucker for most of the fancy things in life. I drive a 2004 Honda Accord I plan to drive till it stops running. I’ve lived in small apartments for most of my adult life. I’m fond of saying that I spend money on food and travel, and that’s about it.

But I do love business class when flying. It’s the lounge access, the ability to try wines I’d never ever spend my own money on, and the chance to take what’s usually the most frustrating part of the travel experience and make it something to actually look forward to.

And so our most recent international business class experience was a fun one for me: I got to try business class on a 787 Dreamliner for the first time. Not only that, we flew it on one of the fanciest carriers that fly the skies today: Qatar. How was it? In a word: Superb. Continue reading

When the Wife is Away, Oh How the Husband Will Play!

Laura is in D.C., and so I came home to an empty apartment the other day. We travel a lot as a couple, but each of us also travel pretty significantly for work. I may or may not be proud to admit I have almost every crevice of LAX mapped out in my head. But I digress. So Laura is in one of my favorite cities in the United States, and I should be jealous, but oddly, I’m not. As I walked through the door to my empty home, a few thoughts came to mind.

First, there was the sentimental, and somewhat regular “oh shit we’re having a baby” thought. That one went like this: Soon, the thought of an empty apartment while Laura is on the road will be nothing but a DISTANT memory. I’ll have this other human being occupying the space with me. What’s more, I’ll be solely responsible for other said human the times when Laura is traveling.  Crazy!

Next though, came the thoughts every man who has been in a similar position has had, whether they own up to it or not. It’s deceptively complex, but the first part of it goes like this: I don’t have to put the toilet seat down for 5 whole days!  Continue reading

Staying in shape while traveling

I have a tendency to wistfully pack some workout clothes each time that I start packing for a trip…hoping that maybe this time I’ll have the willpower to force myself into those tiny hotel gyms a few times while on vacation or while away for work. And then, when I return home, I shamefully pull out those unused workout clothes and put them back into the drawer, promising myself that I’ll do better next time. But the reality is that, more often than not, I get in more of a workout while on vacation than I do on a weekly basis when I’m just sitting at my desk all day. Before you start kicking yourself for avoiding that crappy hotel gym, take a look at some of the other ways that you can stay in shape while on the road. Continue reading
